Clint Eastwood's account of the US Army's most successful sniper eschews triumphalism in favour of a sobering psychological study of a man grappling with his conscience whilst attempting to stay alive in one of the world's most dangerous regions. Bradley Cooper has previously shown his skill with lighter material but exceeds expectations here, bringing gravitas to his portrayal of Chris Kyle. Eastwood's film articulately explores the challenges Kyle faces, physically and psychologically.
